2 TODAY S GOSPEL: MATTHEW 5:17-48 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the Judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny. "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your hole body go into hell. "It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. "Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, Thou shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you. Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil. "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you. "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

6 The Second Week of Great Lent Sunday of the Expulsion - Արտաքսման Կիրակի Prayer of Introspection by St. Ephrem the Syrian O Lord and Master of my life, keep me from being lazy, meddling, ambitious, filled with idle talk; instead, give to me prudence, humility, patience and love, your servant; O Lord, my King, grant that I may see my own sins instead of judging those around me; for You alone deserve praise forever and ever. Amen. This second Sunday invokes the loss of happiness as Adam and Eve chose to be driven out of Paradise. The day's hymn recounts how the forbidden fruit tasted of sin and death. Our ancient forebears knew they had made a mistake immediately after eating the fruit, for they were ashamed of their "nakedness" and foolishly tried to cover themselves and hide from God. Indeed, the sinful notion that they were better, wiser, and more capable than the Almighty in deciding to eat the fruit of the tree of "knowledge of good and evil" is at the heart of every sinful thought or action. We often experience this in daily life. When we do something we're not proud of, facing God is difficult. Expulsion Sunday reminds us of our original exile from God's presence, but an exile that God's mercy will not let us endure forever. He gives us Hope and grants us the opportunity to regain what we lost. READ: Genesis 3, Matthew 5: DO: Call a friend or family member who lives far away, with whom you have not been in touch for a while. Restore a relationship with caring and love in your heart and mind. REFLECT: Talk about these questions with your family How do we ask for forgiveness from one another? When is forgiving necessary--once in a while or always?

7 BAKU MEMORIAL DEDICATION UPDATE Originally, the Baku-Sumgait Monument was to have been completed and installed for a February dedication. However, due to delays in the preparation of the ground and more importantly the delivery and installation of the monument, the date has been deferred to the Spring of As soon as the committee has the assurance of a guaranteed delivery date for installation, a new dedication date will be announced. On the occasion of the 25 th Anniversary of the Pogroms against Armenians in Azerbaijan that began on February 27, 1988 in Sumgait and continued in Baku until 1990, a special Requiem Service / Bashdon Hokehanksdyan will be held next Sunday, February 24 th for all our Armenian brothers and sisters who perished. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) stated in the US Congress from a PR release of ANCA dated February 3, 2011: Mr. Speaker, just as we cannot allow the first Genocide of the twentieth century to fade into history, the memory of the victims of Sumgait/ Baku must not be forgotten either. MONUMENT WORK UPDATE The first stage of the installation of the long-awaited new monument adjacent to the Martyrs Monument has been completed. The foundation is fully cured. Tovuz Village Day Care Center in Armenia Children aged 3-6 are looked after in a day care setting that provides two small meals per day, beds and bedding for rest, love and psychological support in a substandard building without water and electricity. We can help Tovuz villagers renovate their day care center and provide healthy meals. When you are approached by a Church School student with a Lenten Canister, please give generously. We ask God to forgive and restore us to his grace and communion from the actions of Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Covetousness, Gluttony and Lust. 1. Pride - in Armenian Hubardootiun... ATTITUDE VS. GRATITUDE We can be proud when we have happiness and goodness in our hearts, acknowledging that Christ is our center and inspires us to follow His Good teachings and live a God-pleasing life. But pride also can often become an impediment to achieving this. In music, sports, and business, we reserve our applause for the winners only, for those who flaunt their pride with an attitude tending to garner the most publicity. We strut our medals and lift high our trophies in sports competitions, lavishing rewards on winners, forgetting what we teach it s not whether you win or lose the game, rather it is how you play. Pride is a sin when there is no gratitude given to God for what we as humans achieve. It is a kind of addiction, a yearning for ego strokes that will never be satisfied. During Great Lent we need to get beyond ourselves and realize what we achieve is because God has made our achievements possible, and we should always acknowledge those achievements.

There is no Kiss of Peace during the Divine Liturgy. Holy Communion is not offered during the Divine Liturgy. The Holy Gospels Book is not venerated after worship. Hymns are sung in penitential melody. Names of saints are not remembered. The organ is not played when departing from the sanctuary. All should remain silent when exiting the sanctuary after worship in respect to those who remain for devotional prayers. Weddings and Baptisms are not celebrated.
